What’s an architect about?

Strictly speaking, the one who constructs architecture is an architect. It is even more than that, though. Someone who makes sculpture is an architect. An architect is an innovative person who still tries creativity. An architect is someone capable of translating their views into reality. An architect is someone capable of adapting to any circumstance.

An architect, because he or she must create rooms, must have an imaginative eye and artistic thinking. On top of that, with these rooms, an architect would play with light, colors, textures… constructing a whole composition. The architect must satisfy his or her creative purposes or «concerns» in this manner. Apart from this, an architect must have professional and functional experience, of course. Finally, there must be a legal and personal context for an architect. By this, I mean that architects ought to consider the needs of individuals. In the end, they must be exposed not only to aesthetics, but to the desires of people when constructing spaces.

The architect requires some form of preparation in order to satisfy or accomplish these aspects. He or she will expand their minds and imagination in this way. Firstly, the architect must learn to see all that surrounds us, to examine it. To do this, an architect needs to draw, photograph, ride, learn, watch films… Architects have to be surrounded by all aspects of culture and art, to be absorbed in them. Secondly, in order to be critical, architects must learn to think. With the goal of being more professional, architects ought to be in regular contact with their colleagues. Thirdly, architects need to learn to create: to consider the specifications of materials, composition, architectural methods and individuals. It’s simply about translating thoughts into reality.

In reality, Frank Lloyd Wright, one of the most influential architects of the 20th century, wrote a collection of «To the Young One Who Devotes to Architecture» tips. In the series, he advises us that you must have a strong and faithful love for architecture to be an architect. In addition, he urges the young architect to examine everything from the most abstract to the particulars and to check for the explanation why things happen. In addition, he stresses the importance of development and creation, and the essence of ventures. He offers more realistic bits of advice, ultimately.

It is an exhausting job to be an architect. The architect will be surrounded by architecture forever. In your dreams, it will enter your consciousness, both awake and asleep. I’m not quite sure how an architect can be described, but I know for sure that I want to become one.
